Attorney Sandra Sherlock White and Dr. Harry Morgan will provide an overview of how antipsychotic medications also referred to as neuroleptics are used and overused in the elderly population, particularly in nursing homes, and the importance of understanding how these medications are used and overused and how to advocate for elders and conserved persons in these circumstances. Medical data will be presented regarding the indications and risks for use of neuroleptic medication in the elderly. Protocols will be presented to understand behavioral intervention for challenging behaviors. Guidelines will be provided regarding diagnostic considerations in choosing interventions for these behaviors. They will discuss the federal government’s initiative to reduce or eliminate the use of antipsychotic drugs in nursing homes. Sessions are designed for attorneys, but other professionals may attend and can benefit from the information provided.
